The Watchman

The Watchman

Coal Chute Point, Whaler's Cove, Cannery Point, sounds like something out of a Robert Lewis Stevenson novel. Whaler's Cove is named for a whaling station in existence from 1862 to 1879. Cannery Point for an Abalone cannery, and Coal Chute Point, that's right, an actual shipping station for coal mined nearby. Only the Whaler's Cabin and Whaling Station Museum reside there now.

If you take a short climb up the wooden rail tie stairs to the top of Cannery Point you can get to a certain spot that looks westerly. There, if you look carefully, you'll see the Watchman, resolutely keeping an eye over the southern stretch of Carmel Bay.
